Ceramic materials in smart wearable applications

"Smart Wearable Device" is a general term for applying wearable technology to intelligently design everyday wearable devices and develop wearable devices, such as watches, bracelets, glasses, and apparel.

The most popular ceramic smart wearable devices in the contemporary era include: ceramic watches, ceramic rings, ceramic bracelets. Generally, zirconia is used, and very few will use zirconia toughened alumina. Zirconium oxide has the characteristics of high hardness, good toughness, environmental sanitation, and food grade materials.

Electronic ceramics are sintered with oxide or nitride as the main component. In the electronics industry, electrical and magnetic properties are used to achieve precise control of surface, grain boundary and dimensional structure, such as insulation shielding, dielectric, and sensing. Ceramics with new functions such as superconductivity and magnetism

Zirconia ceramic is a new type of high-tech electronic ceramic, which is applied to the appearance parts and fingerprint identification cover plate with outstanding characteristics.

The excellent properties of zirconia are reflected in several aspects:

From the physical properties, the Mohs hardness of zirconia ceramics is about 8.5, which is very close to the Mohs hardness of sapphire 9, while the Mohs hardness of polycarbonate is only 3.0, the Mohs hardness of tempered glass is 5.5, and the Mohs of aluminum-magnesium alloy. Hardness 6.0, Corning glass has a Mohs hardness of 7.

From the point of view of chemical properties, zirconia ceramics exhibit absolute inertness, acid and alkali resistance, and no aging, far exceeding plastics and metals.

From the perspective of communication performance, zirconia has a dielectric constant three times that of sapphire, and the signal is more sensitive, which is more suitable for fingerprint identification patches. From the perspective of shielding effectiveness, zirconia ceramics as a non-metallic material have no shielding effect on the electromagnetic signal, and will not affect the internal antenna layout at all, and can be conveniently integrated.

In summary, zirconia ceramics have excellent performance and will soon be exploding in the consumer electronics field.

We believe that there are great applications in both wearables and smartphones.

Zirconia ceramics enter the consumer electronics represented by mobile phones, and there are three subdivisions. The most important application area is the back cover, which is mainly to upgrade and supplement plastic, glass and metal materials. Secondly, the patch for the fingerprint identification or the outer casing of the wearable device is mainly benefited from the improvement of the fingerprint reader installation rate and the replacement of sapphire. Finally, it is used for small structural parts such as lock screen and volume keys. This is a continuation of the ceramic button business in the era of functional machines.
